What to do in Athens?

The Acropolis

The most iconic landmark of Athens, and of Greece in general, is the Acropolis. It is a complex of historic edifices at the top of a rocky hill in the city centre, built in the 5th century BC under the leadership of Pericles, the most influential and eminent political figure of the ancient Greek world. Some of the greatest monuments on that hill are the ancient temples that were dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and protector of the city, the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaea and the Theatre of Herodes Atticus. You should make a stop at the Acropolis Museum so that you learn everything about the monuments on the sacred rock.

Plaka

Even if you are in Athens for only a few hours, a stroll in Plaka is the best way to spend your time there. It is one of the oldest parts of the city, and you will feel like you have been transported to an earthly paradise of a different era —much different to the urban and industrial setting of the other central sections of Athens. Picturesque stone-paved alleys, colourful buildings and small hospitality businesses will make you want to stay there forever.

Syntagma Square

One more place that you must visit even if your time in Athens is limited is Syntagma Square. Two main attractions lure locals and tourists in the specific part of downtown Athens. One of them is the Greek Parliament, which used to be a royal palace. The second one is The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a war memorial for all Greek soldiers who have been killed during wars, and it is in front of the Parliament. The cenotaph is guarded by members of the Presidential Guard, called Evzones.

What are the transportation options in Athens?

Airport

We should start by saying that many national and international tourists come to Athens by plane. The Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is the biggest airport in Greece and many domestic and international flights occur every day. From there, there are many options to choose from in order to get to the city centre.

Metro

Athens is the only city in Greece where there is the option to take the metro. There are many lines that connect neighbourhoods and districts of central Athens. If you want to visit more remote areas or the outskirts, then you can go up to a point by metro and then continue your journey by bus or by tram.

Taxi

The easiest transport option is a taxi. You don’t have to worry about learning about routes and timetables. There are taxi ranks all around the city so it will not take you long to find one. The only issue with taxis is that if you want to cover a great distance, you may be asked to pay an outrageous amount of money for the ride.

Car Rental

If you care about travelling in comfort and not being overcharged, renting a car is the wisest option. As an urban centre, the roads in Athens are in excellent condition and all the signs are written in English.
